“You have to be smoking what you’re selling.” – Rob Bell
When I watch this, I find my fist pounding on the table in emphatic agreement.
I find myself wanting to grab every disillusioned churchgoer, anyone who’s ever been turned off by sermon series after sermon series, and well-meaning but empty messages. (You know, that I know, that not every message is empty. I’m trusting that you know the ones I’m talking about.) Turned off by thousands upon thousands of “Christian Inspiration” books, of which many just don’t seem to say anything new or interesting. Turned off by a message that can seem old and stale and just doesn’t seem all that relevant.
To grab them by the collar or hoodie or tie and ask them. “Would you reconsider if someone threw some Truth in your lap and convinced you they ACTUALLY BELIEVED IT?”
When I truly believe something, and it’s actually changed my life in some real tangible ways…
…not only do I want to tell people about it, I want to find the MOST COMPELLING way to tell people about it. I want to check, double-check, and triple-check, that what I’m about to say is true and right and has power behind it.
I think we recognize that kind of Truth when we see it. It creates motion within us, a reaction. It can drop us to the floor in humility, it can find us inspired to be more. It has the power to drive us to our knees in repentance and sobriety. It can infuriate us, because that Truth changed THEM and might change ME and –
what then would that mean?
